October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  With an estimated 30,000 new cases diagnosed annually in California, Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of death among women. Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate, it affects people of all races and walks of life, including workers. Many of these women and men balance jobs with the heavy burden of fighting cancer, which makes awareness, workplace support, and accessible healthcare resources not just a health but a labor rights issue as well.

During this month, it’s important to acknowledge the legal safeguards in place to support those dealing with breast cancer. Under California’s paid sick leave law—officially named the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act, workers may use paid sick leave for Doctor’s appointments and check-ups. For Breast Cancer, these regular checkups and screenings save lives, as early detection reduces the risk of dying from the disease. Furthermore, when breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Also, The California Family Rights Act (CFRA) provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to care for their own serious health condition or a family member with a serious health condition. This law is a crucial reminder that no one should have to choose between their health or the health of a loved-one and their job.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we at CAAA encourage everyone to take control of their health by doing monthly breast self-exams, and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms. Let’s continue to advocate for strong legal protections and workplaces that support those affected by this terrible disease, ensuring that every worker has the right to prioritize their health without fear of losing their livelihood.
